It's safe to say that face masks and coverings are going to be part of our lives for the foreseeable future. However, the amount of plastic waste currently created by disposable masks is really quite astonishing. It's been estimated that the UK throws out 53 million face masks per day - just let that sink in, 53 million every single day!
Single-use face masks are made from a mixture of plastics; including polypropylene, polyethylene and vinyl, meaning they can take up to 450 years to breakdown. Even after this process, these materials leave microplastic particles which are already being found all over the world - even in the Antarctic and Artic.
There's also the issue that not all of them actually end up in landfill. You may have noticed them left on the floor, in rivers or streams, dropped in fields or meadows which is a problem in itself. Sea birds and other animals are getting caught in the straps of the masks which is causing great harm to our wonderful wildlife.
Reusable masks are the way forward and the only sustainable option to avoid the ongoing environmental impact to our planet. Here's just a few benefits to choosing a reusable mask:
- Disposable masks are in high demand by the NHS and other healthcare and key workers, so opting for reusable slows the overall demand and in turn creates less waste.
- You don't need to worry about using or disposing of one-use masks properly, without contaminating other surfaces or causing harm to our wildlife.
- Using a washable face mask will save you money over time, as you don't need to continuously keep purchasing them. You can just throw them in the washing machine and they're good to go!
- You can pick your own design. No one likes wearing a face mask, but if we've got to wear them, they might as well look amazing! All our face masks are made from our beautiful recycled silk saris and lined with a cotton lining to sit comfortably on your face.
If you're still using disposable masks and would like to switch to a reusable one, follow the link below to view our collection. All our masks come in sets of two; one to wear and one to wash, with an additional gift bag - which also makes them a great gift for a loved one.
One last thing, if you do forget your mask and have to grab a disposable one as a last resort, please make sure you snip the strings before you ensure it's thrown away correctly. Thank you for reading!
